The Project Soil

"Sending you a bit of American soil so you don't feel so far from home"

The Soil Project - United for the Troops
Sherri Donovan started Project Soil in 2017. She had been sending Girl Scout cookies overseas for many years before, then thought, what could I do that would make the soldiers feel closer to home and their families?

Sherri wished she could send them a little piece of home. Then it came to her, send a bit of American soil! She had her Girl Scout troop and Kindergarten class dig up soil from the Primrose School playground and their own backyards and fill small baggies with soil. Each child made a card, then stapled the soil bag in the card, with a tag, and these words....

"Sending you a bit of American soil so you don't feel so far from home"

  • "Good Morning Mr. & Mrs. Rathschmidt/ United for the Troops,

First of all, we thank you and your son, Luke, for his service. We received your care packages today and were overwhelmed with happiness. We thank you, and those who contributed, for taking the time to make such an awesome contribution to us while we are overseas. Every time I read letters from those supporting us (especially from the children), I always end up crying. Your belief in us helps us stand proud and tall while helping us remember why we are here– as you can guess our days can be quite long and tedious… Again, thank you for your support on behalf of the 21st Combat Support Hospital– “Fear not!”~ Linda A
  • What a Way to Start the Day!

United for the Troops - Soldier receiving packages
"I just received the attached pictures from my buddy who is commanding in Afghanistan and received a bunch of packages from the United for the Troops . I spoke with him over the weekend and the packages arrived just in time as his platoons were spread throughout the south east and were running low on care package goodies. He wanted to extend a big THANK YOU from all of the Soldiers of Apache Company and a special thank you to Lesley for putting everything together."  ~Lesley
  • Hello, and thank you.

" I’m LTC Brittian, and I’m writing to let you know that I received both care packages that you recently sent. My team and I are grateful that you’ve taken the time to send a few ‘creature comforts’ our way.

As parents of a paratrooper, you know that the Soldiers here in Afghanistan are America’s finest, but also know that each of us has a support network that keeps us going. I’m glad to know that “United for the Troops” is part of my team’s network. Thanks again for your support.

    Very Respectfully,

    Brittian"
